[REPORT] underground/overground - Sunday 7th April 2002

You are more than welcome to a Pub meet (12-2pm) followed by an overground excursion if dry or an underground voyage if wet ! The venue is 'The Compasses' at Litley Green, North of Chelmsford, Essex (Nr Felsted). The Compasses is a traditional Essex Pub with plenty of character and is renowned for its Huffers (very large baps)! The local brewery is a stones throw from the Pub and real ale is on offer. Be warned that most of the roads leading to Litley Green are single track....................................

It has been pointed out to me that Littley Green has two 't's so if you have had fun trying to find it then sorry for my mistake!

This event starts with the already detailed pub meet and then we drive through country lanes and villages to Blake Hall nr Ongar.
Blake Hall was one of the secret Battle of Britain command centres and remained almost in mothballs until the early 1980's when it was restored as a museum full of associated artefacts. Douglas Bader was based here. A full size V1 replica hangs from the ceiling complete with sound effects and moving controls!
The House is surrounded by gardens including a tropical hothouse and Essex barn built during the civil war.
This is a very good time to visit with thousands of daffodils in full bloom for those gardeners out there!

Back in the days when I used to teach a lot of pistol shooting, we had a site at Great Saling and there was a nearby pub that we would always go to that served Huffers. I wonder if it's the same one.

Not a million miles away but probably just as good and yes it is a regional dish. Why dont you drive over and find out?
Forecast is for a sunny weekend.............
