If so ...sorry folks. It struck me as something worthy of 'thought' but maybe only to me  :floods:

(goes out of door - puts on sackcloth & ashes and 'This ain't the place for serious posts' hat and comes back................)

Hi!!!! :bounce:

Not at all - it was a welcome elevation of the tone, and much to be commended

If there was any suggestion of wryness, you may be sure it was prompted by posts other than the subject

The problem isn't when a society stops reading, but when a society stops thinking.

We are constantly bombarded with images of what to buy, what to eat, what to wear, what to say and what to think.

People generally take the line of least resistance, it's easier for people to believe everything they see and hear because it doesn't require people having to question anything and therefore think about what the truth might really be, and usually things are wrapped up beautifully with good serving of popular spin.

When people start thinking, people start reading.

Anyway, must go, I've got to pop on my Pradas , jump in my Cooper S and get my ass down to McD's, later!

P.S. without a credible opposition party, you could say we're almost there.

None of those - perhaps the "Commonsense and Solid Values Party".

Fat chance :(

It's difficult to know what comes first - like the chicken & egg debate.

In the final analysis I think both re-inforce each other. Sadly I feel the age of the book is dying out and the age of the 100 minute Bible and the Internet will inevitably take over. With the academic community seemingly greatly reduced in potency, no direction evident from organised religion and most students seemingly showing none of their former moral outrage & 'rebelliousness' (apart from in the area of alcohol overuse) - the future often seems very bleak to me.

I agree about the lack of a credible opposition. Someone described Labour yesterday as being like a team with their goal wide open and undefended - but with no attacks coming from the other team.

But that's another story......................

Right where's that Screwfix catalogue..............

Count me in Ian - especially if your membership cards are as nice as the ones you did for SCORE :)

It'a very tempting to use current SCORE members and 'place' them in positions in the shadow cabinet etc

Aye, there's the rub!

If we have a "broad church" approach to embrace a wide spectrum of commonsense views and solid values, we risk being ineffective, but if we are narrow and proscriptive, we risk McCarthyism.

Alas, poor Yorick!

There's a certain Mr Galloway whose oratory and directness is quite appealing and worthy of Respect
